Contest

The Spelling Bee Championship UAE gives every registered student a structured, fair, and exciting path from first-round speller to UAE National Champion. The competition runs across three stages: Preliminary Rounds, Semi-Finals, and the UAE National Final. Dates, times, and venue details will be communicated to participants closer to each stage.

The format follows Scripps National Spelling Bee guidelines, adapted for the UAE market.

Contest

The Scripps National Spelling Bee offers a customizable format for organizers to use across all competition levels, from preliminary to finals.

Prelims

Registration:

  1. Registration is online through spellingbee.ae.
  2. Once registered, all participants receive a curated word list of approximately 2,500 words to prepare for the competition. The official dictionary is Merriam-Webster Unabridged.
  3. Schools and parents are encouraged to share the registration link with interested students. Our team is available via the Contact page for any assistance.

Preliminary Rounds Format:

  • The preliminary rounds will be held over 2-3 weekends at a designated auditorium.

  • The rounds will consist of both written and oral tests

Written Test:

  • Students will listen to and write the spelling of words as they are pronounced.

  • The test will include 25 words, categorized into three difficulty levels:

    • First 10 words: Easy, 2 marks each.

    • Next 10 words: Moderate difficulty, 3 marks each.

    • Final 5 words: Challenging, 5 marks each.

  • Total Marks: 75

Oral Test:

  • Each participant will be called on stage to spell two words within 2 minutes.

  • Total Marks for this section: 10

Scoring and Progression:

  • Total possible score for the prelims: 85 marks.

  • Those who qualify will be notified via email and WhatsApp and will also see the list posted on the website.

Semi and Finals

Preparation for Semi-Finals:

  • After the prelims, qualified students will be given additional words along with the prelims words to prepare for the semi-finals and finals.

  • External workshops will be available at an additional cost to assist students with their preparation

The Spelling Bee Weekend:

  • The semi-finals and finals will be held over two different weekends, with a three-week gap in between.

  • Exact schedules will be communicated depending on the number of students who qualify.

Semi-Finals :

  • The Semi-Finals are conducted as oral rounds only.
  • Each student is asked to spell two words. An incorrect answer on both words eliminates the speller.
  • Word difficulty increases progressively through the rounds.
  • The top qualifiers from the Semi-Finals advance to the UAE National Final.

 

UAE National Final:

  • The Final is an open-dictionary oral round. Any word from the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary may be used.
  • The competition continues until one speller remains standing.
  • The last student standing is crowned the UAE Spelling Bee Champion and earns the right to represent the UAE at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
